Mexican WFTO member Haciendas del Mundo Maya Foundation was recognized in a study for its efforts in improving the poverty situation of the indigenous communities in Yucatan during the 2nd Global Social Business Summit’s Research Conference on Social Business 2014 in Mexico City in November. During the event, several organisations around the world were also recognized for their actions against poverty.

Our long time German member GEPA - The Fair Trade Company won the German Most Sustainability Award 2014 and one of the three finalists for most Sustainable Small Businesses. This year the competition included a total of 550 nominated companies. Among them were international corporations, DAX companies and traditional businesses.

Italian WFTO member Altromercato won a prestigious recognition by SetteGreen Awards 2014 for promoting Fair Trade food products in Italy. The award was given on 2 December during a gala evening in Milan. The SetteGreen Awards are given to projects that promote sustainability and care for the environment.

The Stop TTIP coalition, consisting of more than 320 civil society organisations from across Europe, hosted a surprise party for Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on his 60th birthday on 9 December. About 100 activists gathered in front of the Commission building in Brussels to hand over a birthday card signed by one million Europeans demanding an end to the TTIP negotiations and the non-conclusion of the controversial CETA deal with Canada.

1 December 2014 - Ninety world shops (Weltladen) in Germany are already using the Fair Trade Retailer Logo, the German Fair Trade Network and member of the WFTO Weltladen-Dachverband reported.

“We are very happy about the enormous and positive response to the Fair Trade Retailer Logo and the WFTO in general. German World Shops are proud to be a proved part of the WFTO-family,” said Silke Steinbronn, in charge of the Fair Trade shop monitoring of Weltladen-Dachverband.

The Good Country Index announced at the TEDSalon in Berlin, measures how much each of 125 countries contributes to the planet.  With Ireland leading the table it turns out that all top ten countries are nations where a Fair Trade Town campaign is running. Is this a coincidence? I think not.

1 December 2014 - African members of WFTO elected a new chair and new members of the board, and renamed their region during their recent regional conference in Arusha, Tanzania, last 12 and 13 November. Rain Morgan of Turqle Trading (South Africa) was elected as the new WFTO Africa Chair, and the region is now called WFTO Africa and the Middle East. Replacing the outgoing board members are Sabine Huester (Kiboko Leisure Wear, Kenya), Mbah Chrispus (Bamenda Handicraft Cooperative Society), Jim Kenyanya (Smolart Self Help, Kenya), and Sara Nakisanze (Easy Afric Designs, Uganda).
