Italian WFTO member Altromercato won a prestigious recognition by SetteGreen Awards 2014 for promoting Fair Trade food products in Italy. The award was given on 2 December during a gala evening in Milan. The SetteGreen Awards are given to projects that promote sustainability and care for the environment.
Winning in the food category of this competition, Altromercato was awarded for their sustainable and green business ideas. Their project “Solidale Italiano” promotes the value of Italian food products that are made from quality producers, in an environmentally and socially responsible manner, following Fair Trade principles.
Their project was initially launched in 2011, starting with some products symbolic of Italy’s typical cuisine such as tomatoes, pasta, and olive oil. One of the main aims of their project is to promote the value of sustainability of organic products, and respect for the environment and the rights of people.
Vittorio Rinaldi, President of Altromercato, said during the award acceptance: "It is an important recognition, which rewards a project on which our consortium is investing a lot of resources and energy and that represents the focus of our activities for the near future: a major new trend, that of Fair Trade made in Italy, together with our traditional work with the producers from the Global South.”
