2021 FAIR TRADE
Thank you to the Fair Trade movement for joining hands for 2021’s three main campaigns. Together, we created record engagement from across the Fair Trade movement in 2021.
On World Fair Trade Day (8 May), we partnered with the Fair Trade Advocacy Office to call to #BuildBackFairer. People danced and launched documentaries, lobbied and celebrated the Fair Trade movement’s vision.
Fashion Revolution Week in April showcased the artisans from the Fair Trade movement. Together, we showed how Fair Trade is an alternative to fast fashion.
On International Women’s Day (8 March) is when we showed the world how Fair Trade is leading on gender equity. In sharp contrast to mainstream business, the majority of CEOs and board members of Fair Trade Enterprises are women.
Spotlight on Fair Trade shops: Stuttgart and Frankfurt world shops
Fair Trade shops are where the magic happens. They connect communities and embody the values of the Fair Trade movement. They exist across the world and share a passion for Fair Trade. In these newsletters, WFTO will profile a shop from a different country each month. For our debut newsletter, we’ve asked two of Germany’s dynamic world shops to prepare a video introducing their shop, project, campaigns and community. We are very excited to introduce our friends from the Stuttgart and Frankfurt world shops. You can watch the video here.
Fair Trade Towns in focus: Drakenstein Municipality and the twinning model with Neumarkt, Germany
Fair Trade Towns show that our movement can transform economies. They foster Fair Trade across the world and mobilise local leaders into action. Each month, we will highlight a different Fair Trade Town from across the world (there are over 2,000!). For our first newsletter, we are profiling Drakenstein Municipality in South Africa, which has recently launched a Fair Trade Town Campaign, becoming the first municipality in South Africa to implement such an initiative. A unique feature of the initiative is the twinning model bringing together Drakenstein Municipality with Neumarkt City, Germany. In May, the newly declared Fair Trade town in South Africa participated in the #BuildBackFairer campaign for 2021 World Fair Trade Day celebration led by the municipal mayor. alliance is born!
In September 2020, a large civil society coalition of international networks including Fairtrade International (FI), International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), Organics International (IFOAM) and Social Economy Europe, agreed to sign the Build Back Fairer Statement. With the support of the Fair Trade Advocacy Office, in the run-up to World Fair Trade Day 2021, these networks joined hands with WFTO in calling for the transformation of the economy and trade system for a just and sustainable recovery. We plan to continue working with our sister movements in the coming months to call on governments to change the rules of the game so that our respective economic alternatives become the norm in the economy and trade.
