The injustices in conventional trade stem from the imbalances of power in the international negotiating table and supply chain. Small, disadvantaged producers are often marginalized by large and influential industry players as well as local and national regulations, leaves many producers stuck in a vicious cycle of poverty.

WFTO President Rudi Dalvai joins us from Italy to explain the innovative, participative and very successful Fair Trade Guarantee System. Rudi will describe both the philosophical and the practical aspects of how the World Fair Trade Organization system, including its democratic approach – based on checks and balances of power and expectations of continual improvement in trading practices and partnership.

Producer representatives Santiago Paz of Norandino PERU and Leocadi Juracan of CCDA in GUATEMALA will present their experiences as cooperative and popular leaders in their quest to create change in their respective communities and their hopes and expectations of a system of trade that is inherently” more fair”.

Rosemary Gomes of FACES do Brazil will present their long history in promoting Fair Trade in local, national and international markets, as well as in creating a change from the supply chain to final consumers looking beyond a simple certification system, to a nation of educated consumers seeking products that represent their ethics and personal values of solidarity and seeks to create greater links of confidence between producers and final consumers.

Moderated by Sergi Corbalan of Fair Trade Advocacy Office, we expect a a lively discussion about when and how certification is an appropriate tool for verification and to discuss the immense needs for a more holistic and people-centered approach to traceability and direct and collaborative trading relationships as a means to gain and maintain consumer trust to better inform activist consumers about where their food comes from.
