CHAKO is a social, creative and environmental enterprise based in Mwanakwarekwe, on the outskirts of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Chako fosters social and economic opportunities on the island by enabling local artisans to preserve their craft, explore their creativity, establish professional networks and live a more sustainable life, while reducing the waste on the island. CHAKO’s products were originally created according to the “Tourist2Tourist” concept. Waste materials produced by the hospitality industry are upcycled to create design objects and accessories aimed at tourists and export markets.
