Sashas’s design thinking is based on the theme that shared responsibility is intended to promote self-reliance in communities and involves collective action to achieve mutually agreed goals. The capacity of people to act together on matters of common interest is intended to bring about a greater difference in the health and well-being of individuals and neighborhoods. The communities profiled here, whose products are being showcased for Beyond Beautiful, found opportunities for people to come together in creation and celebration of culture.
Sasha’s nature-inspired design strategies offer a design philosophy for integrating environmental sustainability in product development, building on the perspective of ‘achieving sustainability’. This perspective challenges the creative team and designers to develop products that, like their natural counterparts, fit within and even benefit the ‘ecosystem’ of which they are part.
This Collection of wooden serving trays are made from Acacia auriculiformis, commonly known as Papuan wattle, Akashmoni in Bengali. It is a fast-growing, crooked, gnarly tree in the family Fabacea, and provides a constant reminder of natural elements in any space. The base of the platters is engraved or chiseled to add texture on the surface while offering a continuation of the wood grains into the design lines. The trees are hand selected, gathered, turned and finished by local crafts people. These wooden products are specially made for those who love nature, and want a little “piece” of nature in their homes. Designed in sets or with divided sections they also exemplify the trend of sharing our dining and socialising experiences in the home.
