Fair Trade Towns Campaign in Latin America

LA

Ciudades y Pueblos Latinoamericanos por el Comercio Justo

Started in 2000, the Fair Trade Towns campaigns have managed to gather more than 1600 cities, which are located mainly in Europe and North America. Latin America and the Caribbean host only two Fair Trade Towns: San Isidro del General in Costa Rica and Pocos de Caldas in Brazil.

According to WFTO-Latin America this number can and should increase. "Ciudades y Pueblos Latinoamericanos por el Comercio Justo" is a collaborative project launched by WFTO-LA and CLAC (Latin American and Caribbean Network of Fair Trade Small Producers) in coordination with the International Fair Trade Towns campaign. Its aim is to increase the number of municipalities and cities adhering to Fair Trade.

For CLAC and WFTO-LA this project is a tool to advocate for fair and solidarity trade. Increasing consumer awareness will have a positive impact for producers in Latin America and in the Caribbean. Project partners believe that it is important to engage Latin American consumers, and the public in general, in responsible and conscientious consumption.

WFTO-Latina America encourages every citizen to take action, and to invite their contacts and local authorities to join the Fair Trade movement.
